The mass massacre of population in Khojaly is the most terrible page in the Armenian aggression to Azerbaijan since 1988. In the Khojaly genocide, the most horrible crime of the 20th century, Armenian nationalists caused unprecedented troubles to Azerbaijani people.
Over the night from 25 to 26 February 1992, Armenians, with support of the infantry guards regiment No.366 of the former Soviet Union located in Khankendi, committed genocide against civilians in Khojaly. The goal was not only to massacre people and force them to leave their lands. At the time Azerbaijan had just gained independence, which irritated Armenians a lot. They wanted to create “Great Armenia” on the basis of lands of others. The major purpose of Armenians, which had an eye on Nagorno-Karabakh long ago, was to occupy Nagorno-Karabakh and other territories of Azerbaijan, damage independence of our people and shake our state. The geographic position of Khojaly, also the only airport in Karabakh was in the town, characterized the attack of Armenian armed groups to the town.
Thus, over the night from 25 to 26 February Armenians stroke huge material and moral blows on Azerbaijani nation in order to reach their disgusting goal. As a result, 613 persons were killed, including 106 women, 63 children. In the course of the tragedy 487 inhabitants were severely maimed, including 76 children not yet of age. 1275 peaceful inhabitants were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown to this day.
Those who committed this tragedy have confessed it in different sources. For instance, Zori Balayan, a participant of the Karabakh stories, favorite ideologist of Armenians, writer, poet, writes in his book "Revival of our soul" about genocide they committed in Khojaly on February 26, 1992: "When I and Khachatur entered the house, our soldiers had nailed a 13-year-old Turkish child to the window… Then I skinned his head, chest and belly. Seven minutes later the child died. My soul was proud. Then Khachatur cut the body into pieces and threw it to a dog of same origin with Turks. I did the same to three Turkish children in the evening. I did my duty as an Armenian. I knew that every Armenian would be proud of what we did.”
However, repulsive Armenian killers, who are “able” only to use violence against civilians, women, elderly, children, could not realize their intentions. All this left unforgettable vestiges in the people of Azerbaijan, but could not break their will. Azerbaijan protected its independence and said its word in the world. A number of countries, international organizations, influential institutions have recognized Khojaly genocide and support Azerbaijan to punish Armenians responsible for this crime committed against humanity.
