UN and Azerbaijan: fruitful cooperation

Nonpermanent membership at the United Nations Security Council, provided the Republic of Azerbaijan with an opportunity to broadly demonstrate its fundamental, humanist and rational policy. The 2-year short but fruitful action, which lasted from October 2011 to December 31, 2013, reinforced a global image of Azerbaijan. Representation of Azerbaijan in this influential rostrum, speaking on behalf of UN indicated an international trust. The basic and firm position our republic took during its nonpermanent presidency justified this trust. For 2 years, Azerbaijan presided at the Security Council twice – May 2012 and October 2013, organized discussions and high-level events on a number of significant themes. During Azerbaijan’s presidencies, the Security Council held 59 open and closed sittings, adopted 7 resolutions, 3 statements by the president of the Council and 13 press releases.

Representation at the Council lifted Azerbaijan’s political weight, confirmed its regional leadership. Today, Azerbaijan is a reliable partner, a desirable collaborator big states attach great importance in their foreign relations. 2-year nonpermanent membership at the UN Security Council will have a positive impact on Azerbaijan’s international relations, foreign policy strategy. This experience will play an important role in comprehension of Azerbaijan’s global necessity and reality, reinforcement of its international influence, assurance of our national interests.
