Icherisheher in the list of sites with “enhanced protection” status

Dynamic development of our country gained in the recent years is highly assessed by the international community. This all-round development is reflected in the cultural sphere too. Interest towards Azerbaijan’s historically cultural monuments is increasing thanks to this development. As a result of this interest the Republic of Azerbaijan has been implementing since the first years of independence the policy of cooperation with a number of regional and international organizations, including UNESCO, which Azerbaijan joined on July 3, 1992.

One of the key directions in cooperation with UNESCO is protection of ancient historical sites, cultural and natural heritage. Mutual cooperation of Azerbaijan with this organization resulted in inclusion of Icherisheher in the World Heritage List.

Icherisheher is one of the ancient sites in Azerbaijan, which enjoys ancient history and culture. Like many towns in Azerbaijan, Baku was also a historical place in ancient times with natural geographic conditions, rich natural resources, trade routes of international importance and high-level economy.

In comparison with other fortifications and defence constructions, this ancient site located in Baku is distinguished for originality and greatness. Created by skillful architects and craftsmen, this great monument takes visitors to the past.

To safeguard this historical site, state care to Icherisheher was increased according to decrees and orders of President Ilham Aliyev. In addition, Icherisheher architectural complex, the historical center of the City of Baku, was included in the World Heritage List in December 2000.

"Enhanced protection" status was given to Icherisheher by the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, which held its eighth meeting in Paris from 18-19 December 2013. It once more proved the high value international community sets to the safeguarding of this gem of Azerbaijan’s rich historical and architectural heritage.
