Relationship between Azerbaijan and Germany

Relations with Germany play a special role in the foreign policy of Azerbaijan and it has a cause. After Germany, which was divided into two, was united for very short time the economic, political and military potential of the state reinforced significantly.

For production indices of GDP, the Federal Republic of Germany ranks 1st in Europe and 3rd in the world after the US and Japan. Germany is one of the biggest states exporting industrial products.

Strong economic positions characterize an active and balanced foreign policy of Germany. For this purpose, ruling circles of FRG try to play a big political role in the world, take an active part in the solution of global problems. Armed forces of FRG participate in peacekeeping operations all around the world, adoption of important decisions of the UN. FRG has a special weight in the formation of the European policy in the framework of EU and NATO. Having confirmed itself as a leading state in Europe, Germany has a strong military potential as well.

In this respect, South Caucasus region, including the Republic of Azerbaijan belongs to the strategic interest of Germany. Azerbaijan’s favorable geographic and geostrategic position, rich natural resources are important but not the only factors characterizing the outlooks for relationships between Azerbaijan and Germany. Azerbaijan opened its first embassy in Europe just in Germany in June 1992, which should be assessed from the standpoint of past-modernity issues mentioned above.

One of the most necessary factors encouraging the relations of Azerbaijan with Germany is that unlike other Western states, in particular the US and France, the Armenian community in this country is weak and almost no lobby.

Secondly, the Turkish community in Germany is huge and organized, possesses strong influence in business circles. Turks are engaged in large lobbying actions as well. In short, by all parameters there are broad perspectives for the development of official Baku-Berlin relations.

Today, Azerbaijan-Germany bilateral relations are developing almost in all spheres, specially in the political sphere. A legal and normative base serving the outlooks of bilateral ties is being improved. Economic relations develop on the basis of mutual useful cooperation, numerous German companies keep on investing in Azerbaijani economy. Germany renders more humanitarian help to Azerbaijan than Armenia. Articles posted in German mass media about Azerbaijan confirm it all.
