In the balloting at the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee 38 of 48 votes supported Baku’s hosting the first ever European Games. Adoption of this decision was the result of the influence Azerbaijan enjoys as a sports country.
 
Azerbaijan’s hosting the first games in Europe, the motherland of the Olympic Games, is a huge achievement and the major factor here is related to the place of Azerbaijan in the international community. Implementation of the fruitful and purposeful foreign policy after becoming independent, development of bilateral and multilateral relations in the foreign policy increased confidence of other states in Azerbaijan. The Republic of Azerbaijan, which is a member at a lot of influential international and regional organizations, managed to assure the international community of the necessity for building mutual useful cooperative relations with Azerbaijan and as a result of this confidence Azerbaijan was admitted into nonpermanent membership of the UN Security Council. 

The high-level sports infrastructure created in Azerbaijan for the realization of the Games indicates the sustainable economic development of the Republic of Azerbaijan. As a result of the long-term reconstruction works carried out in Baku the capital, bringing historical traditions and modernity together, became one of the nicest towns worldwide. Hosting numerous international events, world and European championships, Baku proved it has developed in all spheres and will keep on developing.

Azerbaijan is accepted in the world as a sports state and this is sourced from the successes our sportsmen gain. The high achievements obtained in European and world championships and Olympic Games are the factors to inspire the realization of the first European Games in Baku.

So, the high development the Republic of Azerbaijan achieved in the spheres of politics, economy, culture, international cooperation for the short time after gaining the independence, also the Azerbaijani people’s decently representing their homeland in international events provided a basis for the realization of such high-level events in Azerbaijan.
