Azerbaijan stands in a quite different position among South Caucasian countries that are not famous for national and religious tolerance. Promoting all religious freedoms and ethnic minorities, Azerbaijan has proved itself as a space where dialogue of religions and nations encounter.
Azerbaijan has always functioned as a model of state where representatives of various religions and nations live in mutual understanding. In every historical situation Azerbaijan could demonstrate to the world a political portrait based on tolerance. For representatives of all religions and nations there are all necessary conditions in Azerbaijan to realize their freedom of religion and enjoy equal rights. The main confirmation of tolerance existing in the Republic of Azerbaijan is the affirmation of equality of all citizens in the constitution irrespective of language and religion.
Azerbaijan has confirmed today its tolerance in the secular arena, also the model of state policy ensuring national solidarity, dominated by multiculturalism. In the globalizing world the policy of self-isolation can result in separation of a state from international life, in disintegration. The realities of time prove that isolation of a state of global processes is impossible. In this respect, Azerbaijan, where representatives of different religions and nations live, has achieved to form the model of a specific dialogue. Secular successes and outlooks of the model of tolerant Azerbaijan, where dialogue of religions dominates and all nations live equally and freely, are undeniable. Azerbaijan is a tolerant and secular state enjoying high moral values. Our country has formed and demonstrated the model of tolerance that is a sample to many states.
Opening of Religion and Culture Center of Russian Orthodox Church’s Baku and Azerbaijan Eparchy on November 15 indicates a tolerant environment and dialogue of religions in Azerbaijan. This is the confirmation of the high-level development of relationship between religion and state. Participation of the head of state in the opening of the Center shows a positive attitude to all believers, irrespective of religion and language, a religious tolerance.
Creation of every condition in Azerbaijan for the development of the Christian and Jewish communities, though 20 percent of its territories is under the Armenian occupation, exhibits Azerbaijan’s devotion to the secularity principles. Preservation of historical monuments of varied religions even in the remotest points of the country, works done towards their restoration is a high value the state sets to history. It once again confirms Azerbaijan as an ancient center of culture, a space of tolerance, a center of religious and national dialogue. Azerbaijan is not accidently characterized today as one of the top 5 tolerant countries in the world, as a space of tolerance.
