Spokesperson of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hikmat Hajiyev has said that Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan must be given an international legal assessment in accordance with the United Nations Charter and without double standards, and Armenia`s "impunity syndrome" must be ended.
He commented on Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan`s statement at a joint press conference with Council of the European Union President Donald Tusk. “By demanding a differential approach to Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Armenian President, in fact, recognized the existing reality.”
"Of course, it's necessary to set the difference between Armenia, which is the occupier and aggressor, and Azerbaijan as a country that has undergone this occupation. The judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on the case of "Chiragov and others vs Armenia" is a fundamental document that defines legal responsibilities of Armenia as an occupant country in the context of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict."
Hajiyev said: “Azerbaijan successfully organized the first European games that had remained a dream for Europe for 100 years, contributing to the promotion of the Olympic ideals and philosophy of the Olympic reconciliation in Europe, including the South Caucasus. Armenia, which continued to violate the ceasefire regime on the contact line of troops and throughout the Armenian-Azerbaijani border even on the eve of and during the European Games, proved once again that this country is totally far from the Olympic ideals and values of civilization. Even during holidays of Eid ul-Fitr, symbolizing peace and reconciliation, Armenia violated the ceasefire, targeting civilians, including children."
The Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that successors of the military junta that came to power in Armenia as a result of political terror and the coup d'état in 1999 opened fire on a peaceful demonstrators after a rigged presidential election in 2008, first and foremost, proving that it poses danger to Armenian citizens. "Persons, who have brought the country to the political, economic and humanitarian crisis, criminal and military dictatorship in Armenia trying to divert attention away from the extreme discontent within the country and keep the people in fear through making irresponsible provocations on the frontline. Armenia`s continuing occupation and aggression against Azerbaijan poses a major threat to peace and security in the region and the entire responsibility for this, of course, falls on Armenia," said Hajiyev.
