Azerbaijani FM: "Now the co-chairs will have to decide how to speak with Armenia"

Azerbaijan has accepted the proposal for establishment of a working group to prepare peace agreement

The Co-Chairs clearly state that the current status quo in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is unacceptable. At last, after a meeting in Paris, the French president said that it was time to begin work on the preparation of a peace agreement. The initiative to start working on a peace agreement was made by Azerbaijan", said Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, who is on a visit to Tbilisi.

The Minister noted that the co-chairs supported the initiative of Azerbaijan, and offered to begin the process: "Everybody understands that the conflict can not be eternal. Continuation of this process makes it difficult and dangerous for the peace agreement. We need to finalize a peace agreement in six months or a year. After discussing the proposal with the Co-Chairs, they went with this message of Yerevan. According to my information, the Armenian leadership has refused to this schedule. I've already talked to US Co, who informed me that the Armenian leadership rejected the proposal, opposed the activities of a working group and began work on the preparation of a peace agreement. The co-chairs most likely will determine how to build the work in this direction. We need to start this work, the sooner the better. It is beneficial to all, including Armenia. Azerbaijan has accepted the proposal for establishment of a working group to prepare peace agreement. Now co-chairs will have to decide how to speak with Armenia."

Elmar Mammadyarov said that after the liberation of the occupied territories, Azerbaijan will restore the destroyed infrastructure there: "First of all, the Armenian troops should be withdrawn from these territories, the issues of transport, drinking water and infrastructure have to be resolved, displaced people should return to their lands. The UN's role in this matter should be significant. We, at one time, worked with the World Bank and have plans to restore our territory."
