The fifth session of the conference of the parties to the Framework Convention for the Protection of Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) is expected to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, a message from the Turkmen government said on May 24.
The conference, to be held from May 28 to May 30, will be attended by the representatives of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
The next regional event will strengthen and expand the international relations aimed at ensuring the environmental security and the sustainable development of the Caspian Sea region, according to the order of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov issued with this regard.
The Caspian Sea littoral states signed a Framework Convention for the Protection of Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) in November 2003.
This is the first legally binding agreement ratified by all five Caspian littoral states. The document defines the main directions of management of the human impact on the marine environment, protection and reproduction of biological resources of the sea, as well as procedural issues with regards to common decisions to be made by the Caspian littoral states.
Turkmenistan ratified the Tehran Convention in August 2004. The convention entered into force on August 12, 2006, after being ratified by all the Caspian Sea countries.
