The role of international organizations in the modern global politics and international relations is growing in the past ten years, in particular in the 21st century. These organizations are important mechanisms in the implementation of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Specially, the UN, which brings nearly 200 states together, serves, as a universal international institution, the protection of international peace and security, the development of friendly relationships among states. To be a member of the UN, enhance a comprehensive cooperation with this organization is one of the key factors in order to actively join the international processes, build relations with other states and develop these relations in the positive direction, partake in the settlement of universal and global problems. 

The UN is also a place to discuss necessary problems of the world politics. Fruitful work in different institutions of the UN, the country’s affirmation as a regional leader, dynamic development of market economy and formation of civic society had huge impact since 1992 in the rise of Azerbaijan’s influence as a member of this organization and establishment of deeper and more comprehensive relations. In the Security Council elections to temporary seats for 2012-2013 on October 24, 2011, Azerbaijan won 155 votes. The biggest success of the Azerbaijani diplomacy in 2012 was its election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the UN responsible body ensuring peace and security all around the world. Multilateral actions of President Ilham Aliyev in the sphere of foreign policy, his significant and logical speeches delivered for many times in the General Assembly played a decisive role in this issue. Azerbaijan was the first country in South Caucasus and Central Asia elected a member of the Security Council. This event is rightly valued as a significant political and diplomatic triumph of Azerbaijan in the international arena, since membership in the Security Council provides great opportunities to every country. Members take close part and play decisive role in the solution of global problems. Azerbaijan’s election as a member of the Security Council shows the growing influence of the country in the foreign political circles.

Our country started acting in the new status from January 1, 2012, presided at the Security Council for a month in May. The sessions chaired by Azerbaijan featured serious discussions on the situation in Near East and prevention of nuclear weapons, latest situation in the Balkans, resolution of the Syrian crisis, also a high-level open session of the Security Council on the fight with terrorism was held. Taking an effective part in all sessions of the Council, Azerbaijan has always demonstrated a humanist position towards the establishment of peace, justice and reconciliation. Our country, which will again preside in the Council for a month in October 2013, will pursue a peace-loving approach, propose the models for assurance of peace and equity in the globe.

Election of Azerbaijan to the membership of the UN, which makes decisions on the world’s important issues, votes from majority of member countries to our republic’s election is a landmark and historical event in the history of Azerbaijan. This is a political victory of the state, recognition of the correct political strategy, result of the high prestige of our state.
